Most Crossword GO boards can be finished without spending a single hint. These habits make the difference.

1. Start with the blanks

Fill-in-the-blank clues (HAPPILY __ AFTER) usually have exactly one answer. Solve all of them first — they give you free crossing letters everywhere.

2. Then do the short answers

One- and two-square answers are almost always initials: HOME → H, TOO MUCH → TM. Three- and four-letter answers have few possibilities too. Once they are in, longer words become much easier to see.

3. Count the squares

An answer runs from the arrow to the next clue square or the edge of the board. Count before you guess: if the space holds five letters, a four-letter synonym is wrong no matter how good it looks.

4. Match grammar and tense

A clue ending in -ED wants a past-tense answer. A plural clue wants a plural answer — very often ending in S, which you can pencil in early.

5. Use every crossing

Almost every letter belongs to both an across and a down answer. When you are stuck on one direction, switch to the other.

6. Name pictures plainly

Picture clues want the simplest everyday word — CAT, not FELINE. If a picture answer doesn’t fit, count the squares and try a shorter or more general word.

7. Look for abbreviations

Clues that end in an abbreviation, or mention “for short”, want a short form in the answer too.

8. Leave it and come back

If a corner won’t budge, move to another part of the board. Fresh crossing letters usually unlock it.

9. Save in-game hints for the last word

Hints in the game cost coins. Use them when one stubborn word is holding up the rest, not at the start of a board.

10. Use one-letter hints here first

On every answer page, the Hint button shows one letter at a time. Often the first letter is all you need — and the rest of the solve is still yours.
